The Contribution of Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah in Strengthening Democracy in Indonesia: A Study of Moderate Islamic Politics
Abstract
This study aims to explore the contribution of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah as the two largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia in strengthening democracy through a moderate Islamic political approach. The background of this research departs from the challenges of Indonesian democracy, such as the threat of radicalism, political polarization, and weak public trust in state institutions, which requires an approach based on inclusive Islamic values. NU and Muhammadiyah, with their legitimacy and broad mass base, have a strategic role in maintaining the sustainability of democracy through political education and social advocacy based on the values of Pancasila and diversity. The research method used is a literature study with a descriptive-analytical approach, which examines various documents, scientific works, and related literature. The analysis was carried out with a socio-historical approach to understand the role of the two organizations in the social and political context of Indonesia. Data were collected from books, journals, and relevant documents to explore the strategies, challenges, and achievements of NU and Muhammadiyah in strengthening democracy. The results of the study show that NU and Muhammadiyah play an important role in strengthening democratic values through concepts such as Hubbul Wathan Minal Iman, Darul Ahdi wa Syahadah, and Risalah Islam Berkekean. Both organizations contribute to building critical civil society, promoting tolerance, and maintaining political stability and social justice. With a moderate Islamic approach, NU and Muhammadiyah have proven to be effective in facing internal and external challenges, making them the main pillars in the sustainability of democracy in Indonesia.
